Commuting Advice
There is nothing quite like the freedom of commuting to work. No more waiting at bus stops or at train stations - you have the freedom to travel as and when you choose. You get to burn calories, reduce stress, save money, reduce your carbon footprint and get fit! You can also get to know your city - in London it is amazing how many people will take a tube between destinations that are a few minutes ride away
However, before you take this leap towards your new found freedom, there are a few things to consider:
- If you haven't already got a bike, then you know where to come..!
- Make sure your bike is roadworthy and in good condition by getting it serviced.
- Equip yourself properly. You should carry with you: a puncture repair kit, lights, weather specific kit, a helmet, suitable eyewear, reflective gear, a lock for your bike and even a bell.
- Plan your route in advance, using bike paths where appropriate and make sure you know and understand the rules of the road (see the highway code). Check your route for one-way streets, dead-ends, no left-turns, etc. If you can, practice your route on a Sunday when the roads are quiet.
- When riding, always be aware of the traffic. Don't stop in blind spots, particularly where traffic is going to turn left - large lorries cannot see if you if you wait on their inside. Make sure you can be clearly seen when riding, be assertive and try to ride to the speed of the traffic around you. Always signal clearly.
- Assume everyone else on the road is an idiot and ride accordingly - many motorists turn corners and change lanes without indicating, so be aware of this. Furthermore, make sure that you give parked cars a wide clearance to avoid hitting any passengers leaving the car.
- Cycle confidently but not arrogantly - remember the rules of the road and stop at red lights and crossings.
- Make sure you have somewhere safe to lock your bike up. A locker and a shower at your final destination won't go amiss either.
- Finally, take pleasure in your commute and then sit back and enjoy your new tight butt, the money and time you have saved and the bit you have done for the good of the planet!!
